a narrative textile

"Wearing fashion is a way of wearing time" (Caroline und Alessandra, 2020)

On the one hand, clothing serves as an emotional repository to hold on to moments and memories in the form of an object. Like the jacket we wore to a certain concert that reminds us how beautiful it was or the knitted jumper we got from our deceased grandma. On the other hand, it is our gateway to another world where we can be any character we want to be. We give life to the garment and the garment gives us a world to immerse ourselves in. So there is more value and power in textiles than just being a product that protects our skin. But the memories and emotions, all this immaterial interaction between textiles and ourself is difficult to catch. In this project I did first steps into the direction of finding ways to save as well as narrate all this information. Photographs and stone sculptures serve as the basis for the method as they freeze a moment and capture life. as a starting object I took a shirt with a strong emotional value. I documented and abstracted the emotions and memories through words and images, and captured the physical interaction between body and textile in the form of a material mix of textile and ceramic. Ultimately, my aim is to create a narrative textile that reflects what happens between body and clothing. It communicates with its environment and tells a story, like a wave that is created and travels over many hundreds of kilometres from its point of origin to the shore it finally hits.
